After completing my college education I moved up to the northeast with my trusty truck. I didn’t have much idea about driving on snow as I have always lived in warmer locations. The first winter was extremely bad. The truck did not have 4 wheel drive but I had always found the front wheel drive was more than enough to get you through most normal situations. In the first winter the case was different. Before the first snow fall I rented an apartment that was on top of a hill.
On normal days there was no problem getting in and out of the driveway. But after the snow pack down hard ice and especially when the second snowfall hit, getting out in our drive became a major chore. Coming out was no problem unless you wanted to stop or steer. Coming up the driveway was like a nightmare. I can’t count the times I get stuck trying to just get into the garage. The driveway was like an ice rink due to the ice and slick at the top. At first I took a running start and came up without stopping.I managed to reach the top of the drive without stopping in the middle.But as the winter wore on the top of driveway became more more packed with ice, the trick of getting a running start just make let me clear most the driveway. So my truck would run on momentum and I would get stuck just a few feet from the garage entrance. I then had to dig the truck to get in at night.
Unsurprisingly my tires had worn down the tread by spring. The local tire shop offered a huge collection of tires to choose from. I wanted to make the best bargain as I was a budget-loving customer. The sales person explained to me that all the season tires were not ideal for driving during the winter months. I was advised to use performance tires in the summer time and then switch to winter ones in the fall.
I felt at first he was trying to pressure me into buying an extra set of tires. But after some research I found out that smart drivers actually keep two sets of tires: one for summer one for winter. Performance tires for perfect for driving on dry roads. The winter tires made driving extremely easier during the winter. Switching back and forth allowed you to have the best tires no matter what the season.
No other tire would perform better in winter than a set of Cooper winter tires. This way you can save a lot of money. Two sets used consecutively would not last as long when compared to two sets of tires. The shop also gave me information about the rebates available online. I then waited for another rebate to save money on the winter set in the fall. The following year my truck was not a big issue.
